Certifications our teams earn

Beyond our own evaluation and training, our teams pursue national recognition through the American Kennel Club and the R.E.A.D. reading program.

AKC Therapy Dog titles

The AKC Therapy Dog™ program awards an official title to dogs who have worked to improve the lives of the people they visit. It recognizes dogs and owners who have given their time volunteering as a therapy team. To earn the title, dogs must meet experience and eligibility requirements, and it can be awarded at several levels.

Our dogs have earned AKC Therapy Dog (THD), AKC Therapy Dog Advanced (THDA) and AKC Therapy Dog Excellent (THDX) designations.  Here are some of our past and present dogs who have earned levels of their therapy dog title.

The R.E.A.D. Program

The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program helps improve children's reading and communication skills through a powerful method: reading aloud to a dog.

R.E.A.D. volunteers are working therapy dog teams that visit schools, libraries and other settings as reading companions for children. Teams must complete the certification training and be active with a registered therapy dog organization to earn the R.E.A.D. designation.

R.E.A.D. certified teams are marked with a badge on our Our Teams page.
